Personal Development

I have often wondered whats the difference between success and failure.  Many would have you believe that its Money.  Others would say having Good Luck.  Yet some say being born in the right place and right time.

While all of these may or may not play a factor in success or failure.  We most define what is success? What is Failure?

Some of the greatest minds in history have died BROKE!  Yet through some of their accomplishments we look at them as Successful.  Some of the richest people in history have died all alone and dead broke.

I look at Success as a State of mind! Being happy with who you are and enjoying the life that is around you.  Being thankful for what you have all the while striving to leave the world a little better off than when you arrived.

I look at Failure as a State of Mind! Not happy with who you are.  Always blaming others or complaining that they have something that you don’t   It’s not fair, or if only I had the opportunities they had.

Do you see where I’m going with this?  Do you understand that we are all either Successful or Failures.  But it is really up to one self.   Many people look at Sam Walton as a very successful man.  Look at all the wealth he created! All the stores he opened.  All the jobs he helped create.  My personal opinion is that his real wealth lied in the fact he was who he was.  Drove an old Pickup, didn’t try show off and look a part of something that he wasn’t.  Not that he couldn’t afford to, but it was who he was.

Where is your state of mind?  Are you a success or are you a failure?  See the truth of the matter is, only you can truly determine rather you are a success or failure.  If you try to live up to other peoples expectations, you will always come up short!  The only person that really matters is the person staring you back in the mirror.

Reminds me of a story I once heard.  There was a annual stockholders meeting in a little two bit town in the hills.  People traveled from all over the world to this little town.  After a few years some of the Stock holders complained.  They stood up at the meeting one after one and said I so and so from out west.  I own 100,000 share s of Stock and would like to move this meeting next year.  Another stood and said I own 200,000 shares and I would like to move the meeting.  After 5 or 6 people stood, a small gentlemen in Bib Overalls stood and said I own 3 million shares and would like to invite all of you back to our town next year.

I hope you have enjoyed this post.  Share a comment with me and tell me what you think Success and Failure are.

Make It A GREAT Day!

Funny story Bill. One of the richest men of his day was H.L Hunt. Went to work everyday. Drove himself and carried his lunch in a brown bag. As I live in a 2 bit town away in the rural countryside of England, I found the story at the end of your post amusing and intersting.

I don’t know if you have the same system in the US as we do here – villages and towns get twinned with a foreign city etc and exchanges take place between local dignatories and business leaders so we can learn from each other. Here in Oakham we’re twinned with Barmstedt in Germany and Caudebec – en – Caux in France. We also have strong connections with Wisconsin, USA, as the European HQ of LandsEnd is here in Oakham.

Success really is a state of mind .. there’s an even smaller village about 10 minutes drive from where I live (see I told you it was a 2 bit town!) and it proudly boasts a sign ‘Twinned with Paris’ .. it raises a smile everytime I drive through. If you could see how tiny the village of Whitwell is you’d understand why. Whoever the guys were who managed to ‘twin’ with Paris clearly had ‘success’ as a mindset and felt that the village had plenty to offer despite being just a collection of a few houses and a pub!

Just because they’re bigger and more powerful than you doesn’t mean they’re more successful .. we all have plenty to offer.

Thanks for a great post Bill :)

Personally, I have to disagree on both definitions of Success and Failure in this post… Understand it’s out of the utmost respect for the poster – and the readers – for I used to think the same. Allow me to share my insights.

Case in point: Wayne – a co-worker of mine when I worked at the tireshop… prides himself in living check to check.. his ability to cheat customers.. goes home to his rusted out 1978 Chevy Van.. arrives to work the next day smelling of booze.. and thinks he’s living a life of fulfillment and joy by contributing to others with his wise-cracks about sexy women. That is NOT success – unless success is just a state of mind.

Success is the result of a prosperous state of mind.

Now – as far as failure goes: This is not a state of mind either. Failure is a prerequisite to success. One cannot succeed at anything great without experiencing failure (even repeated failure) at points throughout the journey. If failure is not a part of your life – you are most certainly not succeeding at anything.

The opposite of success is not failure – it is mediocrity.

And mediocrity is a result of a poor state of mind.

    Paul,

I agree to disagree! I believe that Wayne is content and may feel a success simply by being able to live the life he chooses. I know many people that have felt a form of success without ever feeling a sense of failure. I believe that ones state on Mind and expectations is what makes them a success or failure.

It is not my place to state rather a person is successful or a failure because I don’t know the whole person. What lies in the background or what secrets they may have.

A person can truly only be a success or failure to the person looking them in the mirror. Everyone else is just an opinion.

    Respectfully

I love any post that challenges us to internalize what we believe and take a deep look so we can see what is working or not working for us.. I believe we all have different definitions of what success means to us so there are no right nor wrong answers.. but for sure and for certain EVERYTHING is a state of mind.. good bad or indifferent!

And the only thing over which we seem to have any control or choice is about where we put our attention and our focus and what goes on between our left and right ears!!

I was always taught, and have always believed, that those who are truly successful don’t have to flaunt it. Those who do aren’t really truly successful, because the very fact that they feel they have to flaunt what they have in the way of “things” and money, means that they are missing something vital to their own happiness and contentment with who they are.

Success is not about money or things. It’s about being true to yourself and who you were meant to be. Thanks for a great post, Bill!

Great post! It can be so easy to get down on oneself and where we are in life. We feel a lot of that has to do with comparing. If we spend time comparing ourselves to others we often feel like we have failed. The truth of the matter is, we don’t know all there is to know about these other people. They may be miserable or in poor health and not enjoying their life at all.

You are so right!! Whether we are successful or not depends totally on our outlook… our state of mind.

Hmmm, I think this is a great post, Bill, AND I have to say I have a difference of opinion on a few things. To me, failure is not always about blaming and complaining. I see failure as the accumulation of poor choices or errors in judgment that repeat themselves day in and day out ~ mostly because you believe they’re such small things they don’t matter ~ but sometimes you truly believe they are the right and true path! Then when you fail, the mastery comes from how we respond to the failure ~ do we let it bury us or lift us to new insights, growth and success?

I fully support that our state of mind is an essential part of the equation, but I can’t fully say that failure is all bad either. :)

Great topic. This is a question that I ask of people when I interview them for a position on my team. It really reveals a lot about who they really are based on their answer. I would like to suggest that failure is not a negative thing despite what the current society tells us it is. It is one of the things we go through on the path to success. I would even go so far to say that “Failure is the only option for success and defeat is not an option.” Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

What a great and thought provoking post. Your questions are important to ask on a regular basis. “What is your state of mind? Are you a success or a failure?”

It is not a one time thing. We tend to feel successful when the world is going our way. And then we may feel unsuccessful when things go wrong.

To me, success is having the ability to create value for yourself and others, regardless of circumstances. Earlier today I heard about a woman who had been in a concentration camp. When the interviewer asked her what that experience had been like and how she felt about it, she answered: She didn’t answer with the typical “Poor me, how I suffered there.” Instead, she thought for a moment and said “That was a place where I could do a lot of good.”

To me, that lady is a success! Thanks for a wonderful post.

I found this post very interesting Bill!

Ever since I lost my mental capacities from a car accident, I’ve been fascinated with the mind and geniuses.

Each person sees success and failure through different pairs of sunglasses. Some let it bring them down. While others don’t believe in failure just learning experiences. The only failure is to give up.

The mind is powerful and the key to remember is that it’s a great servant but a horrible master. We must be in charge of our mind instead of the other way around. More lives have been damaged by their own non-intuitive thoughts than anything outside of them.

Success is a feeling, a state of mind. What you have is a result of who you are and what you do.

I like Gandhi’s quote of success: “Full effort equals full victory.”

It doesn’t mean you stop working to move forward (because that is hugely important)…but you have a great starting point if you learn to love the life around you and work from a perspective of joy and contentment rather than bitterness and discontentedness. The energy that you create is so different between the two perspectives.

    Thanks!

    Bill Reply:

I agree with you Bruce, being true to yourself and who you are is the starting point.

    Thanks for the comment.

    Hi Bill,

thanks for bringing the attention to the state of mind.

Those who appear poor could be the happiest and/or wealthiest people in the world if their state of mind is align with focusing on the good around them.

Some rich people don’t allow themselves to enjoy life, so are they rich?
